Der Falke Der Herbstfarben

Description

Conceived back in autumn and not completed until February, because that's how I roll.

I was inspired by (what else) the colors of autumn, and I wanted to create something that was rougher than my usual woodcuts- one that looked like an actual woodcut, rather than a super-clean piece that could be anything from screenprint to digital.

To achieve that, I left as much noise in as I could, which was actually harder than I thought because I'm so used to carving deep and super clean. I also used red oak instead of shina, which gave a much rougher texture that showed up on the final print. My next print will definitely play up the natural texture of the oak, because I really liked that effect.

The title is German, inspired by the Old Germanic time sign on the figure's helm.

Thank you to all the lovely ladies and gents who helped me with the translation of the title- you know who you are.

8-run reduction woodcut on red oak, 9"x14" (I think?), 25 impressions. Originals are for sale if you're interested.

Geez, it's dazzling! I have to admit I didn't know there are contemporary artists that still do woodcuts, and with so much skill to boot.
