Cosplay- Squirrel Girl 02 by rabid-potato Cosplay- Squirrel Girl 02 by rabid-potato
I spent this past weekend at Wondercon in San Francisco, and I had a blast. I re-wore Squirrel Girl on Friday, debuted Hellcat and Spider-Girl on Saturday and Sunday, spent far too much money and got far too little sleep. In short: it was awesome.

This is kind of Squirrel Girl v. 1.1. Since last year's Wondercon, I've fixed it up a bit- cutting the thigh openings higher and the neckline lower, and putting grommets up the back so I can lace it up and make it fit a little better. Granted, there is no way this costume will ever be flattering (especially not with that ghastly wig), but there you have it.

Photo courtesy of the always awesome Mike at Conpix.net. I'm so glad I have better photos of this outfit now, because before I only had a couple and they were terrible.

Busy. Busy adding more pouches to everyday heroes who do not need them.
Superman. Spider-man. Iron man. These people now have pouches.

Iron Man could use some pouches.

He needs somewhere to store the booze, after all.

Is this an original character or is she from a series? Sorry...I feel lame for asking. XD

Lovely work though. =D

Haha, no worries!
Squirrel Girl is a Marvel D-lister, originally an Iron Man gag character. She has plot armor.
If you pick up the "Great Lakes Avengers: Misassembled" trade paperback, you'll see what I mean. She's hilarious.

Haha....wow. She sounds interesting. I'm always rather hesitant to get into Marvel/DC because of all the history/back log I'd have to sift through. o_O; Of course, I guess I could get trade paperback collections of certain series. I'm used to tankoubons from manga (they're always sold in volumes since most series are featured chapter by chapter a bit at at time in 'x' magazine until they're popular enough to warrant getting a tankoubon). I guess it's the same thing with American comics, save we get to buy issues and then later on a collection of whatever issues are released together.

I just like buying things all at once, and so that's why the idea of buying certain issues of one thing, and a volume or two here and there are rather daunting in my mind. o_O

Mmm, yes, that's the problem I had when I first started trying to get back into comics- for a while I was a huge weeaboo and thought that anime/manga were the COOLEST THING IN THE WORLD, but then my aesthetics changed and I started liking the westerns styles more again. I don't bother with monthly issues because I prefer the book format and I'm too poor to buy both monthlies and trades

Honestly, when it comes to comics backstory, Wikipedia is your best friend. If I pick up a trade paperback and I have no idea what's going on, I just hit up wiki and it all makes sense. I do agree, though- I think that the never-ending cyclical nature of Marvel/DC is actually detrimental to new readers because there's so much backstory to slog through until you can enjoy it. I tend to like the comic series that are self-contained, like Hellboy, Invincible, Kabuki, etc., and I especially love them if they have a proper beginning, middle, and end, instead of going on forever.

Yeah, and since I wrote that I bought Invincible Iron Man and...yeah, I totally love it. The style is more refined than manga and I love that it's all in colour. I'm really impressed by the layout and execution of it all. I don't know why it took me so long to really get into American comics. o_o;

I still do like some manga but it's really quite easy since it's all black and white with tone shading (that's done digitally now) and even though they both have their strengths and weaknesses, at least, right now I really favour American comics over Japanese ones.

I've bought a few X-Men issues in the past but I didn't know where I was supposed to go from there so I was rather put off haha, but I want to start getting into more X-Men stuff now as well since I grew up on the cartoons. =) And Batman of course, can't forget him. =D

Invincible Iron Man is <3. Granted, I'm really not digging Frank D'Armata's coloring, but the stories are fantastic.

And oh man, I loved the 90s X-Men cartoon. I do agree that sometimes the X-Men are hard to follow, especially since there are so many teams. I really like Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men, but it does require some backstory before you can get into it, otherwise you'll be going "huh???" the whole time. Fortunately my friend who lent me those books wrote up a synopsis of the recent history up to that point and includes it whenever he lends them out, haha.

That's sweet. =D I tried getting into Ultimate X-Men (since it's the reboot) but it seemed like it was trying too hard to be so different from the original series and I dropped it.

I'd like to check out Astonishing though. =D Sounds cool.

And yeah, I'm pretty much spoiled on the art in Invincible IM because it's so great, but sometimes the colouring (especially on the flesh) looks a bit muddy. Other than that though, I think it's great. =)

Ultimate X-Men...is kind of balls. They were totally trying too hard to be "edgy" and "new" and it just didn't work. I felt that way about most of the Ultimate line, actually. Ultimate Spider-Man is fantastic and I really like it, but the rest of the Ultimate line is pretty bad.

By not flattering You must mean freaking awesome. I love this costume and I know I would freak out and photograph you if I saw you at con in this. Except I would probably be more excited about running into you period.

How are the bottoms of your costume feet holding up? Are there a pair of off camera slippers you walk around in?

Oh man, I'd love to hang out with you. I've never met anybody else who fangirls over cosplay AND printmaking. Someday I shall travel the world! Or something.

I have a pair of sandals that I kick off for pictures. I've worn them with 3 separate cosplays now...best $3 at a thrift store I ever spent.

I know what you mean. I have to take off my glasses for every shot... because I am afraid of contacts.

Too bad we live on opposite ends of the united states. A chance encounter seems unlikely but you should let me know if you are ever planning on visiting GA. :)

I will be sure to do so! Maybe one of these years I'll get out to Dragon*Con...

I wore contacts for the first time in years for Wondercon, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. Granted, I went through about a quarter of a bottle of eyedrops, but I actually managed okay for the weekend.

I usually hit up AWA that's the big one in my opinion. But a lot of my friends love Dragon con although it is a freaking mad house. But yea I would totally provide food, shelter and futon, and I hope that doesn't sound creepy.

Also my grandpa lives in CA so I could let you know if I am ever heading in your direction.

He lives close enough to the bay area that a visit to that area would be highly probable. In fact I think my Uncle lives even closer to the bay area. That would be unreasonably exciting.

Maybe it used to belong to a tranny but they threw it out and the ebay seller I bought it from found it in a dumpster somewhere. That would explain a lot.
